The reason why the Chery Omoda E5 wants to use LFP batteries is that they don't explode easily over long distances

PT Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) announced that the Omoda E5 electric car which will launch on February 5 2024 will use a Lithium Ferrous Phosphate (LFP) battery.

According to the Head of Brand Department of PT CSI, Rifkie Setiawan, LFP batteries are made with a cathode material made from iron phosphate.

"So (LFP batteries) are not dangerous for health and the environment," said Rifkie in his statement, Friday (2/2/2024).

The use of LFP batteries is widely used by electric car manufacturers from China, so it is different from South Korean electric cars which are made of nickel or called Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries.

Rifkie also stated that using LFP batteries has many advantages, so this is the reason why Chery implemented it on the Omoda E5.

So, if you want to know what the advantages of the LFP battery used by the Chery Omoda E5 are, here is the review.

1. Safer from heat

Rifkie said that LFP batteries are heat resistant and do not explode easily. This battery is also resistant to punctures from sharp objects and is more stable when exposed to hot temperatures.

2. Safe even through floods

As is known, in a number of regions in Indonesia, when it rains, they often experience quite high levels of standing water or flooding. However, Chery claims that the Omoda E5 is safe when passing through flood waters up to 45 cm high in the rainy season.

With ground clearance reaching 190 mm, the Omoda E5 and a strong steel plate to protect the battery from hard impacts.

3. Can travel further distances

The LFP battery used by the Chery Omoda E5 is known to have a capacity of 61 kWh. So, with this battery power, this electric car can cover a distance of up to 430 km using the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) method and 505 km using the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) method for one full battery charge.

4. Suitable for the Fast Charging Feature

Using the LFP battery on the Chery Omoda E5 is very suitable if used with the Fast Charging feature. According to Chery's records, to charge the battery from 30 percent to 80 percent, it only takes approximately 30 minutes.

5. Various other advantages

LFP batteries also have other advantages, such as slow heat release, low heat production, high initial temperature for exothermic reactions, and the ability to not release oxygen when damaged.

All these advantages make the Chery OMODA E5 LFP battery the right choice for consumers looking for a safe, efficient and long-lasting electric car.
