Cheapest New Private Jet, Still in Production (Part 3 & 4)

Continued Parts 3 & 4. Prices for new private jets vary widely, with the flagship model having a list price of $75 million.

However, what if you want to buy a new private jet that is more affordable? What is the cheapest new private jet on the market?

So, which are the ten cheapest private jets to buy new?

The prices below are standard prices for each new aircraft from the factory. With options, the price will likely increase. Also note that this does not include list prices for discontinued or used aircraft.

The aircraft below are all in production.

3. Cessna Citation M2 – $4.7 million

On the podium for the cheapest new private jet is the Cessna Citation M2 coming in at a new list price of $4.7 million.

Graphics The Cessna Citation M2 is the smallest jet in Cessna's line of aircraft in production. The M2 is part of the Cessna Citation series of jet aircraft. Launched in 1989, the Model 525 first flew in 1991. One year later it received FAA certification. Deliveries began two years later. The basic Citation model jet was later updated to become the CJ1 and M2 variants. The CJ1 takes a different path than the M2. CJ1 was developed into CJ2, then CJ2+.

The M2 was launched in September 2011. Cessna based the M2 on the then-discontinued CJ1 variant of the Citation family of jets. Cessna updated the M2 to feature a new cabin layout and more efficient engines. The first prototype flew in 2012 with production starting at the one year level. Since 2013 more than 250 M2 aircraft have entered service.

The M2 is marketed by Cessna as an entry-level jet for customers. Customers who want more speed, more range and more convenience. The M2 offers serious jet performance. Thanks to its size, the M2 can be operated by one pilot, making it perfect for customers who want to reduce costs or to pilot the aircraft themselves. As a result, M2 is a good candidate to be an aircraft owner/operator. However, note that single pilot operation is standard in the VLJ category. Many larger aircraft can even be operated by just one pilot – such as the Pilatus PC-24 and Embraer Phenom 300E.

If you want to get a used example then you can expect to pay at least $3.5 million. Remarkably, given the popularity of these aircraft, 2019 and younger models will likely be priced above the new list price of the aircraft.

4. HondaJet HA-420 – $4.8 million

From now on, the cheapest new private jets of all will be Very Light Jets. Of course, this is not surprising considering that this is the smallest and most entry-level private jet available on the market.

The HondaJet appears again on this list, with the older HondaJet HA-420 costing just $4.8 million when new.

A used plane will cost anywhere from $3 million to $5 million. However, most pre-owned aircraft range between $4 million and $4.8 million.

The HA-420 HondaJet is the culmination of decades of work from a Japanese company known for taking its time perfecting its products.

Development of the HondaJet began more than 30 years ago, with the aircraft's first flight taking place in December 2003 and full production beginning in December 2015. Since the first aircraft rolled off the line, the manufacturing plant in Greensboro, North Carolina has built more than 150 HondaJet, categorized as a Jet Very Light (VLJ).
