The All New GR86 as the 2nd generation of the Toyota 86 sports car has succeeded in capturing the hearts of customers with the distinctive appearance of a Toyota sports car, fun to drive with agile and accurate handling, light weight, balanced weight distribution, and low center of gravity.
All the advantages of the Toyota 86 are further strengthened by the All New GR86, coupled with an increase in engine power that makes customers smile behind the wheel, enjoying a pleasant driving moment.
"Toyota 86 is a sports car that has responsive handling thanks to its low center of gravity, and is also easy and comfortable to drive daily or on weekends," said Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), Anton Jimmi Suwandy.
"We are grateful that since its introduction in 2012, more than 800 Toyota 86 units have become the sports car of choice for customers in Indonesia," he continued.
"Therefore, we present the All New GR86 with a new engine that is more powerful, as well as a more aggressive and sporty design to answer the passion and expectations of fans in Indonesia," said Anton.
The All New GR86 continues the role of the Toyota 86 as an icon of a fun-to-drive sports car.
The Toyota 86 takes development inspiration from the legendary AE86 in the 1980s, and has now become one of the classic sports cars admired by car enthusiasts, including in Indonesia.
Having an aggressive and aerodynamic exterior design, the Toyota 86 is also favored by many modifiers in the world because this sports car is very easy and fun to modify.
Bigger and Powerful Engine
Toyota has named the new line of engines used by the All New GR86 as "Dynamic Force Engines".
To bring out the full potential of the engine, the basic engine structure was completely rethought using the TNGA platform, and the overall configuration was developed by Toyota engineers to achieve high levels of driving performance and low exhaust emissions.
Reaching one of the best levels in terms of engine power and thermal efficiency, Toyota's advanced technology coded D-4S regulates high-speed combustion and a variable control system.
The goal is to achieve greater thermal efficiency and produce more power, thanks to reduced energy losses associated with exhaust and cooling systems and movement of mechanical components.
"With the spirit of Let's Make Ever-Better Cars Together launched by Toyota President Akio Toyoda, Toyota collaborated on the development of the GR86 engine," said Anton.
"The boxer engine is suitable for the responsive handling character of the All New GR86, enhanced by the application of Toyota's advanced D-4S technology that is able to provide the best thermal efficiency, and produces strong power and torque output in every engine speed range to meet the driving needs of sports car enthusiasts, both on the circuit and on the highway," he said.
The boxer engine application is placed as low as possible to obtain a lower center of gravity and more aerodynamics.
This horizontally opposite engine uses the same engine block as the Toyota 86, but the capacity of the 4-cylinder engine coded FA24 is increased from 1,998 cc to 2,387 cc by increasing the piston diameter from 86 mm to 94 mm.
The maximum power of the All New GR86 increased by about 17.5% from 200 PS to 235 PS at 7,000 rpm.
Torque also rose 22% with a peak of 250 Nm at 3,700 rpm, better than the previous 205 Nm at 6,400–6,600 rpm.
The optimal combination of power helps to deliver a smooth and powerful performance up to high engine rpm and provides satisfactory acceleration when exiting corners thanks to strong torque at lower rpm.
For power distribution, referring to Toyota's track record of sports cars that utilize Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) or rear wheel drive.
Starting in 1973, the Toyota Celica 1600GT immediately won the 6th overall position and the first winner in its class at the Nurburgring 6-Hour Race.
The complete database and long experience of creating fun-to-drive RWD cars are inherited in line with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's motorsport DNA in presenting ever-better cars, including the All New GR86.
The All New GR86 suspension system as a support for the car's performance during fast maneuvers has also been revised. The shock absorbers and conch spring characteristics are optimized to provide a predictable movement for the driver.
Coupled with the Torsen limited-slip differential provides convincing traction when cornering.
"Both the engine and suspension on the All New GR86 are specially tuned in-house by the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing racing team to produce a more sporty driving character, as well as more responsive acceleration and handling," said Anton.
Racing and Aerodynamic Style Exterior Design
The All New GR86 expresses the layout of the front engine and rear wheel drive by adopting a style that refers to Toyota's classic sports cars such as the Corolla 2000GT and AE86 with the characteristics of a longer engine room, compact cabin, and wide body.
The car's low shoulders and parallel to the hood line give it a classic yet modern feel.
TGR brings expertise and experience in the touring arena to maximize aerodynamic advantages while instilling a bold racing look.
Such as the use of Front Air Dam in front, Aero Stabilizing Grain in the corner of the bumper, Air Outlet behind the front wheels, Side Sill Spoiler under the door, Rear Wheel Arch Fin on the rear fender circle, and Rear Air Breather under the front bumper.
While above it, the Ducktail Spoiler helps maintain stability by utilizing the airflow from the roof of the car. In addition, the All New GR86 is also equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels to strengthen its racing look.
To maximize its sporty character, the All New GR86 has also been equipped with Official GR Aeroparts consisting of GR Front Bumper Spoiler, GR Rear Bumper Spoiler, GR Side Skirt, and GR Trunk Spoiler.

Sturdy and Strong Lightweight Chassis
Toyota wants to bring the sensation of a car that moves exactly as the driver wants on the All New GR86.
To ensure that engine power spills can be controlled with precision, the chassis and body have been reworked with lightweight, high-strength materials to provide extra rigidity while reducing weight and strengthening in key areas for increased safety.
The touch on the front makes the lateral rigidity of the front body increase by 60%. At the rear, there is a touch in the handling of the G-Force generated during cornering, so that it is not easy to oversteer.
The focus on reducing weight and reducing the car's center of gravity is reflected in the use of strong and lightweight materials in key areas of the chassis.
Such as the application of high-strength steel and aluminum materials that help control roll and pitch behavior. Aluminum is used in the roof panels, front bumper and hood.
Plus, further weight savings from the front seats, silencers, and a propeller shaft design are key to the 53:47 front and rear weight balance.
This, as well as making it one of the lightest 4-seater coupe on the market. In fact, the weight of the All New GR86 is almost the same as the previous generation even though there are additional features.
“The All New GR86 is the third global GR sports car model alongside the GR Supra and GR Yaris. The All New GR86 is directly handled and developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) so that it can benefit from TGR's involvement and experience in winning various international motorsport events," said Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), Fumitaka Kawashima.
